Exercise; It's Your "Declaration of Independence"
Most people say they want to remain living at home, independent and meet life's challenges as they get older, yet doing so requires maintaining a level of functioning that enables one to live life to the fullest. The ACSM and AHA have specific guidelines in Older Adult Exercise, we follow these national standards for safety, effectiveness and to provide desired results.
Jacqueline has extensive experience in geriatric exercise program design to individual clients and senior living environments such as assisted living, independent living and foster homes. Her 2003 fall prevention program was accepted for continued education credits by the State of Oregon Department of Human Services for foster home providers. _Reduce healthcare cost and cost for assisted and personal care, inactivity after an illness or hospital stay dramatically reduces strength and endurance placing you at a higher risk for falling and injuries related to falling. The right exercise program performed regular and continuously can prevent or reduce the cost of personal care and help you avoid assisted living.

We offer fitness and functional fitness assessments and design a personal exercise program that meets your fitness level, goal and/or medical condition(s), that you can perform independently at home, fitness center of your choice or with our personal training services.
_Senior Fitness Testing: What is your current level of functional fitness? When preparing for long-term independence you need to know your current functional fitness level. The senior fitness test is safe and meets scientific standards for reliability and validity and has performance norms for persons ages 60 to 94. The test shows your strength and weakness and provides data for the trainer to appropriately design an exercise program that meets personal fitness and lifestyle goals. We have tested hundreds of seniors and provided appropriate program designs.
Turning Back the Aging Clock Many seniors now realize that regaining and maintaining muscle and bone strength through resistance training enhances how they function every day and are staying independent at home. Research shows that "most improvements in balance, mobility, walking, function, levels of physical activity and risk of injury from falls result from resistance training," with exercise as an essential part of a long-term independence plan. A well-rounded exercise program includes cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, flexibility and balance training.
The single trait most commonly associated with frailty is decreased muscle strength or sarcopenia. “Sarcopenia” or severe loss of muscle and muscle strength from long periods of inactivity due to a sedentary lifestyle(inactivity) is the main reason of reduced functional ability.
Frailty makes many seniors more susceptible to osteoporosis and an increased risk of falling and fracture, these are preventable with a sensible resistance training program.
With increasing chronic illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hip and knee joint replacements, stroke, fall(s), frailty and reduced physically activity, it becomes increasingly more difficult to perform activities that are important to sustain an independent life.
Exercise is an ageless activity, werther improving posture, better balance, preventing falls, preventing frailty, maximizing health or just adding clubhead speed to your golf swing, you are never too late to start a sensible exercise program.

Exercise is Medicine
The Exercise is Medicine™ initiative is a shared vision of American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Association, designed to help improve the health and well-being of our nation through a regular physical activity prescription from doctors and other healthcare providers.
ACSM and AMA are calling on healthcare organizations, physicians and other professionals, regardless of specialty, to assess, to advocate for, and to review every patient's physical activity program during every comprehensive visit.
The guiding principles of Exercise is Medicine™ are as follows:
Exercise and physical activity are important to health and the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases
More should be done to address physical activity and exercise in healthcare settings
ACSM and AMA are making efforts to bring a greater focus on physical activity and exercise in healthcare settings
Exercise is Medicine, the unfilled prescription, have it filled by Fitness & Function. As a fitness professional I play an integral role in educating my clients about the medicinal benefits of exercise and how my clients can speak with their primary care physicians about physical activity.
